I've recently got hold of a gateway card love it so far, I've noticed a little issue though with some games not running on my micro SD card which is formatted to exFAT but these same games run fine FAT32. Is this a common issue and is there a work around? thanks

Fragmentation issues don't occur because of specific games. They occur when you keep deleting games and adding new ones. In general, once you add a game to the SD card, you should leave it there.

That said, copying everything to your PC, formatting the SD card then copying it back across will solve any fragmentation issues.

There's no need to use FAT32, exFAT is fine. But if you have fragmentation issues, copy the roms to your PC, format the SD card, then copy the roms back to the SD. You won't lose save data doing that.

It'll take about 40mins to transfer everything back and forth :( Oh well thanks for the advice guys. The microSD is PNY 32GB Class10 I'm sure it's high quality.

Yeah, it's annoying.

The golden rule is to try to avoid deleting roms from your card if you can. When you do that, you create 'gaps' on the card (which is essentially what fragmentation is).

You can try copying a specific rom to PC, deleting that specific rom from the card then copying it back. That might work.

number your ROMs (and files!) you add to your Gateway MicroSD card, so you remember which are the old one to not delete, and which are the last added one you can delete.
01 - my first rom.3dz
02 - my second rom.3ds
03 - my homebrew.3ds
04 - My third rom.3dz
05 - etc...

if you delete the homebrew, delete file number 4, 5 and next too.

When you add games, put them in "I'll keep it forever" priority ;)

There are tools to fix the fragmentation error :
contig which will make all files contiguous on disk. there's a GUI too called PowerDefragmenter. You can verify in how many fragments a file is split with command line : Contig.exe -a ROMfile.3ds

Gateway 3DS Fragmentation error fixer (by _Tim_) : a tool released by a GBATemp member to fix this fragmentation errors.

Or a lot of defragmenter which move files to make them contiguous.

Yeah, don't use FAT32, it's slow.
Also try not to delete and add more games constantly. It's best if you copy your games all at once.
If you start getting fragmentation errors, format the microSD and copy all the games to it again.
Always use the 'quick' mode when formatting.
Don't waste your time defragmenting. It's much faster to just format the microSD.

Defragging flash memory of any sort isn't good for it period :)

Otherwise yeah just format it, only defrag mechanical drives. :)
