Is there more to this combat system than mashing A? I've played a bit of it and it seems like a nice enough game, but the fights are driving me insane.

Well, you can pick up and throw back bullets, and sometimes you have to face the back of an opponent or wait for the right timing to mash A, but yeah, that's basically it. At least it is until you get about halfway through the game, after that you get the ability to throw energy if your energy bar is full. Unfortunately it takes pretty long to fill and only lasts 10 seconds or something.

Once you get near the end of the game, you get the ability to move the control pad around in mid air to do different slams.

Let me tell you, it gets tedious after the first half of the game. Unless you like the story (which I found pretty generic and extremely predictable) then you'll be bored of the game after the first half.
