Hacking softeware 2.1...safe for twighlight,homebrew etc?

hi guys,i have done about 4 wii systems with the usb loader,twighlight hack etc...would a system with software version 2.1 be safe to do the twighlight hack and a usb loader too?

maybe you can find a game with an update of 3.2 to 3.4 on it

punch out contains 3.4 update.
and mariokart 3.1

so i need the original mario kart,and then its just a case of loading it up and letting it update when prompted?is it as easy as that?
