Oh come on, Halo's one of the worst offenders for churning out identikit space marine shit with awful stories. Halo wasn't even original when the first one came out.
Halo is one of the best games out there. The storyline is great. I'm not a fan of FPS games, but that one is simply the best. Name another FPS with a better storyline. CoD?
Half-Life?

Half-Life was pretty fun, but I don't think the story is better than Halo. The game was pretty boring to play, especially the first one. So many long running parts with no action. You could be going the wrong way for an hour and not even know it.

I hope your kidding?

Fps with a better storyline than halo? That's a tough one. Doom II for a start.
Heh, what a joke. Doom 3 was only fun because it's scary, not because of the story.

QUOTEI hope your kidding?
Why would I be kidding? The story has a whole universe around it. There's so much to it.

Well i'm up to mission 5 and I like the storyline so far, it's engaging, cinematic, never a boring moment.
I think some people just expect too much from this game what with the huge success of the franchise, but take it as a game and it's enjoyable.
Maybe some people are hating just to be different?
And no I'm not a fanboy, I couldn't even get through modern warfare 1/2 campaign or World at war, and the online multiplayer is just horrible on MW2 with all the exploits.

The only huge success this franchise has enjoyed is being able to rehash the game 6 times and have it still sell.

I'm not really a fan of the overall stories in the recent CoD games but I AM a fan of the way they tell the story throughout the game.

I think the CoD titles have you jumping around from character to character and country to country so much that it's hard to actually get into the personalities presented and the doomsday scenarios involved.

That said, I'm such a sucker for the things that happen in-game in MW & MW2, for example:

MW: The sniper level was sooo fucking cool, carry MacMillian on your back to safety while gunning down Russians and waiting for your heli to arrive at the abandoned carnival area... intense! Not to mention the last few minutes of the game when you have to watch your team get gunned down before a pistol is slid over to you, TAKE THE SHOT! God I loved that!

MW2: I was hooked once I heard that one of the storylines presented was America being invaded by Russia. The Washington DC levels... fucking brilliant. The environment was surreal and awesome, I just loved it to death... and once the heli crashed... oh shit. It was nice tip-toeing through a powerless DC after the EMP, in the dark cold rain with your squad. Backtracking a bit, playing as Soap in Brazil and running across rooftops to get away from the enemy mob, amazing. Just so many vibrant environments and locations, I loved the semi-scripted moments!

I mean, just they way they set up some of these events and have you play through them in a unique way... I think CoD has always excelled at that.

However, I think I am more of a fan of Infinity Ward's work than Treyarch, mainly because Trey almost literally copies IW's winning formula to a point. Yeah, of course they make modifications, but none that take giant leaps like IW does (such as the leaps between MW to MW2). Trey copies the winning formula that IW develops and isn't as creative as IW, I'd say. WaW's single player campaign was just uninteresting the whole way through. I was pretty pissed when I saw they even threw in a sniper level very much like MW.

Because in all honesty, Halo isn't that great a game, Half-Life would be a better choise over Halo any day

Please tell us how we are meant to give you a better FPS title when you have already decided Halo is the best (in terms of story)? Honestly, look at Half-Life 2 and its episodes for a great first person experience.
I only just got into playing Reach and it sure as hell wasn't for the story.Halo, until that point was the epitome of boring game design and story but for some reason, this one got me hooked, and for that, I blame an industry that is slowly lowering our expectations.

You better be trolling. Halo's storyline is shit, but the gameplay makes up for that.

CoD, on the other hand...

+1

I didn't like BO for Wii because multi-player feels mad awkward. Didn't try other console versions yet.

If you have noticed, most Call of Duty fans are not really gamers (Definitely not all, but in my school, that is definitely the case).

These people like it because:
A) It's violent.
B) It's a fun game.
C) It's skill-less. These people don't realize how skill-less the game is, but that's one reason what makes it fun.

Personally, I hate Call of Duty not really because of the game, but mostly because of the players. I don't like the game, and I think there are tons of FPS's that are better, but I hate how Call of Duty fans think they are playing a skillful game.

One piece of proof I have that it is a skill-less game is that when Modern Warfare 2 came out (In November of 2009), my friends were playing that game everyday. New Year's Eve comes along, and at a friend's house, everyone is playing it (Four player/split-screen). I was able to keep up, and even beat some of them. (I barely had ever played any FPS, I had no experience with FPS's on a console, and I did not know what most of the buttons did... and I managed to keep up with them).

I'm not saying skill-less games are bad, because a lot of them are fun (Mario Party comes to mind), but I hate how people brag about their rank in a game where your rank cannot go down.

To sum up what I said, most people enjoy Call of Duty because it is talentless, and when people win, they gain utility, and like the game.

Half-Life wasn't all run-and-gun, it featured a hefty set of puzzles and puzzle-like scenarios. Now it may just be your personal preference that an FPS has run-and-gun gameplay from start to finish (to the point of mind-numbing repetition) but that doesn't leave much room for things that make a great story (such as character expansion and interaction aside from yelling at each other while in a firefight).

Also, keep in mind that Half-Life was released in 1998. Some of its charm may be lost on those of you that have developed a fondness for the new-age of FPS'. I can honestly say, however, that I don't think there would be a Halo without there first being a Half-Life. Half-Life raised the bar for FPS' back then and even HL2 has done the same more recently.

You know what's worse? It came out right before Remembrance Day.
I was at a ceremony, and they were reading off the names of some fallen soldiers. Then I heard a kid behind me talking about his prestige level. Hope for generation: Gone.
Your judging a whole genreration based on one kid?

Same thing happened today at my school. A Vietnam veteran was talking about his "call to duty", and immediately kids start talking about CoD. They have no sense of perspective about war and I was appalled at this disrespect.

Well, Halo does have a sucky storyline, but Doom II was made by John Carmack and id. Carmack's philosophy on video game story? "Story in a game is like a story in a porn movie. It's expected to be there, but it's not that important."

"It's a fun game." < Well, isn't that why most of us play video games... to have fun? I don't think it's right to label someone as "not a gamer" because they have fun playing a game.

As for your piece of proof, there are a number of things that actually could have been happening. First, maybe your friends were "skill-less" as you put it. I don't think this is the case, however. Secondly, I think that when anyone picks up a controller and sits down with a new game for the first time, their mind is scrambling to adapt and adjust, learn how the game works, the mechanics. Even more so in your situation, which pit you against those that have been playing the game for a while before you. I wouldn't doubt the first few lives you played with your friends you were utterly lost, confused, and frustrated. As you gained the knowledge as to how the game works and you started developing your own methods and strategies to best your friends, you began to use them effectively. You gained and retained skills (deny it all you want), perhaps more quickly and used more effectively than the friends you beat. And don't tell me you didn't have fun knocking them up and down the maps, haha...

Lastly, I think bragging, boasting, and trash talking about rank and superiority is part of the "CoD culture" and what makes the community what it is. CoD has a very large community and with that comes truckloads of trash talkers that tend to want to back up their words with the actions they can perform in-game. Boasting about rank is just one way the community expresses itself, I don't think it's that bad...

Couldn't put it any better myself and trash talking etc is part of gaming culture in general, not only CoD. We however do see most of it in CoD games because most of these players think they're big men in a science fiction world wielding a big gun.
