Hacking So how's playing PS2 on the PS3?

So I want to buy a PS3, because I found out it'd be more economical to buy a PS3 than to get the stuff needed to hack my PS2, however I've heard playing PS2 games on a PS3 isn't really that good unless it's a Phat that supports PS2, and honestly I want a Phat anyway so I don't have to look at serial numbers when I buy the thing. But I'm young and am certainly not comfortable or even able to crack the sucker open and apply some new thermal paste. Same goes with all consoles really, it was the reason I never bought a 360. So can someone clear the air for me? Maybe suggest if I should get a PS2 or PS3 right now. Like there's quite a number of games I wish to play on both platforms, so I'm honestly not too sure here.

I have cecha model (ofcourse first i do - remove ihs and change termal paste to mx4). Very good playing ps2 titles. Before i own ps3 slim cfw - it can play ps2 games with ps2placeholder, but some games run good, some poor.
If you want play ps2 games on ps3 - best choise launch models cecha/cechb (not cechc/ceche), but ihs removing needed anyway.
And look at pcsx2 - with filtering, upscaling and AA old games look amazing (relatively). One thing - pc only..

I'd would but let's just say my PC is worth about a dollar on Ebay. My main issue is I'm not in a position to remove stuff like the thermal paste or the IHS whatever that even is.

I would personally save up to improve or build a decent PC for pcsx2. Playing on the ps3 will have its limitations in terms of compatibility if you go the hack route/ps2placeholder.
A Jailbroken ps4 carries the same issues as well some games will have noticeable graphical bugs while they play flawlessly on the pcsx2.
But if you really need to play ps2 games on a ps3 then ps2 classic - placeholder is your next best option.

For PS2 on a PS3, that original model (that wasn't released in Europe) is really the only one worth getting, in terms of compatability... but buying a reliable US or JP *fully* back-compat (via hardware, not software) phat PS3 will end up costing you a lot more than getting a PS2, a FMcB memcard, a SATA adapter from AliExpress, and a cheap harddrive.

I have one of the original EU 'back compat' phats (via software emulation), but I only use it for PS1 and PS3 - I use my PS2 for PS2.

Yep. I actually bought a PS2 (and barely use the PS3) since:

1- Outrun 2006 is unplayable even on gxemu
2- PS2 Classics (which I prefer to other CFW hackjobs) can only use netemu in the first place

Is it better to use the PS2 placeholder over isos and Cobra? I use Cobra, and basically games that work work, games that don't don't. If you want to be able to play anything then you need a fat PS3 or a PS2. If you just like having it as an extra thing to go with your PS3 games then a slim is totally fine.

I consider the ps3 with full hardware to be backwards compatible with ps2 the lucky ones. There was one with semi functional backwards compatibility where it featured half the hardware needed and the other was software emulated. Then the full software ones with CFW, kinda wish I can use the disc to play them but you have to use iso. On top of that, some games don't work, and if they do, I'm not sure how much worst it is compared to full hardware compatibility ps3. Not to mention they may be the ones with the hardware failure "YLOD" everyone had complained about.

All I know is I just wanna play Street Fighter Alpha Anthology. :ninja:

I bought a japanese CECHA for around £50 on ebay, maybe I was lucky. I occassionally try to pick up one of the non DECKARD slim ps2 and they aren't far off that price.

The first european PS3 were backward compatible, although the compatibility was supposedly slightly less as the EE was software emulated but the GS was hardware (I don't have one, I have enough PS3 and the european fat consoles are more expensive than the japanese one was). I also already have a DECKARD slim which runs OPL pretty well for the games I actually want to run.

That's the model of PS3 I have, and the compatability is awful (at least going by the library of PS2 games I own - maybe a quarter of the 80 disks I have work 'properly', half work with slowdown or other issues, and a quarter don't run at all).
Also, all the phat models are extremely unreliable these days - unless they've been professionally serviced, it's only a matter of time until they start to fail... mine has recently been freezing when booting anything from the optical drive, and I've taken extremely good care of mine for the entirety of the time I've owned it. I'm hoping to replace it soon with a moddable slim.
I stand by my previous post; the PS2 is the best and cheapest way to play PS2 games, PS3 is great for PS1 and PS3 (and PSP to an extent, although I use my Vita for that).

You are wrong. Launch models have nice cooling system, and if ihs reinstall with termal paste replace - console will work. One issue maybe - tokin, but it fixable.

It depends on games you want to play. Some games work fine with just software emulation on PS3 ... while others don't work.
