Previously PS3 homebrew basically meant installing Linux and running Linux based programs (emulators, etc)

Running swap magic directly saves not only HDD space, but time required to back up original stuffs, install Linux, and configure.

PS3 users who are desperate for homebrew already have Linux installed,
PS3 users who are not really desperate come up with this kind of alternatives.

Swap Magic is still too much hassel IMO.

Makes me sad that there has been so little progress-wise in PS3 homebrew. I was hoping it would be easier to crack like the Wii was. I've unwillingly had to do the System Updates! Boo...

You can install Linux regardless of firmware version.
Depends on what kind of homebrew you want, but making homebrew for Linux would be far easier than making homebrew that runs on PS3 O/S / XMB IMO.
