Hacking sky3ds vs gateway/O3DS vs N3DS

I have a gateway for my old 3ds xl so I know how gateway works, but would it be better to go ahead and get a sky3ds cart and buy a new N3ds because I dont want to get rid of my old xl but I dont want to risk buying a N3DS and it being above 9.2. responses? scenarios?

Sell the XL get a gateway and new 3ds while you can. Use this thread as reference https://gbatemp.net/threads/n3ds-xl-firmware-by-version-number.381479/ to find a New 3ds on 9.0-9.2 at stores like walmart and target.
Worst case scenario you have bad luck 3 times and get your money back in store. if they ask why you want too see the boxes just tell them some 3ds's are being sold with better screens in them and you want the best model but the only way to know is by checking first hand.

AFAIK you can check the serial number of the package box to see if it is >9.2
Why spending more for another flashcart while you have already had one

Best bet would be to search for a N3ds on 9.2 or 9.0 using the Serial / Firmware guide. Only get a Sky3ds as a last resort imo; avoid at all cost.

It does not "work on cias". For it to be able to work with .cia files you would need a firmware of 9.2 and bellow which is GW/CFW compatible btw soo no one in their right minds would choose Sky over those two.

The point was the guy above said that Sky supports 9.8 and is able to run .cia files.

Doesn't cfw only work on systems running 9.2 or lower FW? Which would make buying a Sky3ds in the first place pointless.

But yeah, saying Sky3ds can use .cias, homebrew & even region free (to an extent) is pretty misleading. I include region free only because it's not apart of Sky3ds, but rather something sky3ds can make use of from another persons work.

*for someone who reads stuff properly, which is pretty rare on the internet, even i mostly just skim stuff sometimes......how many times did we see "so gateway update supports 6.x so i bought it and its not working HALP!".....if someone was on 9.2 or lower it would be better to go with pasta or gateway.....i suppose if they have a second 3DS on 9.3+ then sky3DS might be a good investment, but really saying stuff like "sky3ds supports cia installs and 9.8" in the same sentence will probably confuse a lot of the usual victims who rush to buy and first ask questions later.

but for the OP i would suggest he just looks for a 9.2 or lower system and gets hold of a copy of CN/ocarina of time fore a few mins to downgrade MSET and use his gateway on the n3DS and his o3DS, if he is familiar with the setup and is used to it, really GW is still the best option for the n3DS, cartless bootup via MSET, emunand, xenoblade (which is probably one of the only real draws to the n3DS atm)

Yes there is. You can run CFW provided you're firmware 9.2 or below. Which, honestly, kind of defeats the purpose of getting a Sky. Also, can Sky run .cia files alone? No, no it can't. His post was very misleading.

If that's the case, you can easily get a confirmed 9.2 or 9.0 N3ds off ebay ranging from ~$280-350 on average, then just stick with the superior Gateway.

Of course it varies from seller to seller, but so long as you read the full description and the seller has a good feedback record it's pretty safe. Ebays return policy tends to favor the buyer anyways.
