Hacking skin creator

is there a good skin creator because the one from here is rubbish most of the buttons are ??? or they are disabled so i can only do little bits of a theme

There are 2 different skin maker/editors at the ak site link, use Dan Taylors editor, as it better than the other one, and rocks like Dokken in the '80's.
To start off making a new skin, try using another skin as a template to edit to your liking.

Have you read this "how to?" Nothing there about "skinning" other than "coming soon".

Rather, take a look at DiD's excellent guide (over at NDSthemes.com) to all the bits & pieces you'll need, some tips for color-picking (frickin' AK designers made black the transparency color...yeah, that's useful) as well as some helpful template files: DiD's Acekard 2 Theme requirements, template and more...

only true black is. 1 hex off (which still looks black) is not transparent.

*sigh* I know, I know...just a bit frustrated as a theme I put together has to go back to the drawing board as a ton of stuff that I thought wouldn't be transparent turned out to be. It's just be easier if Team AK had chosen "Magic Pink" instead.

i was pointing to the wiki more for how to use gimp...but yeah, the skinning how-to is in dire need of attention. I nominate/volunteer YOU as the one to start to fill in the blanks, TraumaHound =)
