Should i buy a Playstation 2 or 3?

I would like to play some Playstation 2 games, but unfortunately my PC is not strong enough for accurate PCSX2 emulation. The PS2 is only 50 bucks or so on Amazon, and it can easily be homebrewed to play any game i want from what I've heard. However i have also heard the old Playstation 3 model can also play PS2 games, and there are certain PS3 exclusives that i'd also like to play, although it does cost an extra 50 dollars, and I have no idea whether it can be homebrewed or not (since i'm on the Xbox side).
So that's why i would like suggestions, should i get myself just a PS2, or is it worth getting a PS3 for the 7th gen exclusives, and can the PS3 be homebrewed without a console/online ban?

The 60 GB fat PS3 model is as far as I know, the last model to support PS2 games without resorting to the shoddy software emulation Sony uses, but they are rare.

How about upgrading your PC specs to emulate? You also get to play PC games as well. I'm sure it'll cost more but I think you'll get more value for money.

there are 2 models that play ps2 games.
the one that does it officially thgrough software is not worth it IMHO
i had that one, didn't play ps2 games that greatly.. some played perfectly however there are several with issues..
the one that does it through hardware, wich were not released on europe i don't know if it's better in this aspect..

however an hacked ps3 can play plenty of ps2 games through ps2 classics...

if you can, get the phat one and an adapter so you can put an HDD inside
you can also get a ps2 slim for very cheap and just use discs.. or SMB but with the games prices nowadays i don't think it's an issue anymore to buy the real discs of the games you will be playing..

but which one.. get a ps3, check how that works for you, you can later get a real ps2, or even update your pc to play emulators...

i agree, buy a phat ps2 with network adaptor and IDE HDD and then buy a PS3 slim and flash it to 3.55 firmware then put CFW on it.

This. If you can afford it, get both. A fat PS2 with network adapter + HDD (you can use SATA with various converters or a modded network adapter, don't buy a clone network adapter!) is pretty nice to play on, and only takes about 10-20 minutes to mod with FHDB if you have all of the software handy (and either a USB enclosure or a way to hook the drive up to your PC). Then get the slim PS3 so you don't have to worry about YLOD issues/needing to resolder/reball it later on down the road.

Ps3= uncharted, rdr, last of us and for cfw you need to be on firmware 3.55 or if you can find already 1 that modded hid console. About online, don't think it's 100% safe because you can immediately get banned if the system detects the cfw, you can try to hide it and hope for the best.
Also for ps3 there are some ps2 ported and made hd version for example gta san andreas.

I personally use a slim PS2 with the memcard hack, and I use a crossover cable to connect it to the ethernet port of my PC. The PS2 can load ISOs over the network, and if you're willing to block the lid sensor, you can even play burned PS1 games if you have at least one legit game/demo disc.

Also, the network loader for PS2 games can save to virtual memory cards stored on your PC. No having to fight for space with any game.


Lastly, in my experience, even with a good PC, PS2 emulation, while quite accurate, is laggy on the visual feedback. You end up seeing the results of your button inputs moments later, as if you were using a laggy TV, and there is no solution for it.

I think the fist thing you need to do is figure out which PS2 games you want to play, then see if they have been ported to the PS3.
