SOUNDS AWESOME! I haven't played games like that before, but I'm always open to trying different games from the mainstream ones.

I'm not very happy about these first screenshots: http://nintendo3dsblog.com/first-look-at-shinobi-on-the-3ds
I honestly think the graphics are very poor. I hope they don't screw this thing up =p

To be fair, on the Master System Shinobi had weaker graphics than a lot of games of the era but at that time we were more wowed by gameplay than graphics (graphics weren't totally unimportant, but everything looked better than it would have on a cassette-loading system.

I will have to investigate this after spending so much time in my formative years frustratedly struggling to duck behind a box to avoid a throwi...shuriken.

I wouldn't know, I had a Master System but I only Shinobi game I played was its Shadow Dancer (it was a exclusive for Europe and Brazil). It wasn't bad looking, and the gameplay totally owned me (even now I have a hard time defeating the FIRST boss).
But I totally see your point, I guess I just saw some average looking graphics that will be in a system that I think I'm still overrating and started ranting. I totally agree with you, if the gameplay is fine than I guess the graphics don't matter that much.

Btw I already read somewhere that the difficulty in this Shinobi will be insane, so I guess it's SMS's Shadow Dancer all over again for me T.T

I won't really rely on those images.

Those are pre-release images...

Remember Ridge Racer 3D in the first JP 3DS software lineup and how AWFUL it looked? Well, at least in the actual game it isn't that bad.

Assuming these are representative, these graphics are actually worse than Shinobi III on Genesis. (Granted, SIII had awesome graphics...but that was, what, nearly 20 years* ago?)

Both MTV's and Destructoid's previews make the game sound really promising. As much as I enjoy some of what Griptonite have done in the past, my biggest fear was they'd merely recycle move sets and animations from past DS games. That doesn't sound like the case, and it also sounds like they're keeping the level of challenge up to snuff for this series. I'm looking forward to it very much. But I'm partial to ninja-related...anything, really.

As long as it is harder than Assassins creed on DS was, I wouldn't even mind them stealing other movesets (Altairs Chronicles had the same layout and movesets as a Java version of Splinter Cell I had on my phone, but it was a shorter game!)
