My only question is... Why do people even make dumbass predictions like these in the first place??

The Mayan Calendar: It can't go on forever, there has to be an end for everything, it just happened to be at a close date from now.

The point of Y1K was that the computer systems would be messed up by the change in millenium. Still didn't pan out, but at least it gave people a reason (albeit an unfounded on) to fear the end.
