you can use a normal size phillips in those screws, they're actually pretty flexible. you should be fine.

Yeah, use a 0 (phillips or jis) for the backplate, a jis 00 for disassembling the console itself

You really shouldn't use a normal sized screwdriver to open the new3ds. You aren't always guaranteed that you either have the right one or a consistent grip.
I use a kit like that to open my 3DS.

I used a kitchen knife. I think i said that somewhere before, but i guess i did not. Anyway, booo nintendo for making such a bad decision. Maybe hate me for not having such tools around the house, if i had known i would need such a small tool for use considering many things i have do not have screws or even that small to begin with. Anyone remember the circle pad pro? It had required a screw driver, but it was a common size one even a coin could been used. (Or fingernail if you know how to do it) But such tiny screws is uncommon, is obviously for some kind of reason to keep people out of accessing it.

I use a similarly sized screwdriver to open my backplate, fits fine.
