Unreal Engine 5 fan remake Gamma Emerald gets its first early access release

After being announced last year, the fan-made remake Gamma Emerald has finally gotten its first early access release. A complete rebuild of fan-favourite Pokemon Emerald in Unreal Engine 5, the game has amassed a sizeable following keeping up with the small developments as they've been posted. On the creator's YouTube channel, we've seen teasers for the battles, area design, and various menus. Not to mention showing off the Game Corner in its full glory.

A lot of effort has gone into making this game feel like the originals, while introducing new graphics similar to Square Enix's HD-2D titles. You can find an overview of what to expect below, with this first release featuring content up to the region's third gym:

What to Expect said:
In the Overworld, there is
  • The entire path from Littleroot to Mauville (including every interior) built tile by tile.
  • Your LEAD/Ace Pokémon can follow you around outside its ball.
  • Day/Night system, encounters may adjust with the time.
  • Berry System/Planting works with the IRL clock. It takes IRL 8 hours to grow new berries.
  • HMs are now automatic, you no longer need to teach them to your Pokémon, once obtained, simply interact with a tree, rock, boulder, etc etc and your party will take care of the rest. Ignore the contradictions with that at the time.
  • Hidden Items around the map, Hand drawn town map
In the battles you can expect
  • Turn based system built from scratch accurately representing battle logic
  • Battles are influenced with Abilities, Held Items and weather, with status and more.
  • TMs are taught from the Change Move screen, not the bag.
  • Trainers can be rematched (after beating the early access)
  • ONLY single battles, in the early access, I did not have time to make double battles.
  • Physical/Special SPLIT in battles, gen 6 formula and rules
Systems in game
  • PC and Box storage are right on you at all times, for convenience
  • Daycare system has full implementation
  • The Game Corner has been added (some Pokémon listed are out of stock)
  • P2P trading
  • Controller support, it is highly recommended you commit to a single peripheral. Switching between controller, keyboard and mouse and clog the UI system and you may experience unexpected bugs.

Not everyone can know every game engine
You make a good point.

Maybe the developer just really wanted to use Unreal Engine 5 for their project. Still, I think there are much more suitable engines for a pixel art game. You have to be a huge fan to put up with those system requirements and overload your PC with UE5. Let's hope this game manages to survive Nintendo's claws.

After looking at the gameplay

I think the NPCs need to be tilted more - a bit like how A link between worlds tilted all the NPCs

Guys, it's the same game remake on 3ds but in unreal engine

Okay all I'm gonna say on the Palworld business is that even Japan is sick of Nintendo's shit and denying the patent stuff.
Palworld did nothing wrong.

I just had to open the itch.io link and click on download. 1.4GB
As gracile as a gazelle... or what was the name of the animal with the trunk again?
🐘

Nope.
1.4GB is perfectly acceptable for a remake like this, perhaps even quite small. Did you step into a cryopod in 2001 and wake up just now?

On the other hand wish whoever was leading the project would choose a FOSS engine instead. Castle, Darkplaces, Redot etc, or write it yourself and use an existing rendering framework like OGRE. You wouldn't be constrained by the license and it would run better too. You don't need UE5 to do this.

Pokémon fans will complain about the state of the series but then they'll also just gobble up the ugliest fangame imaginable just because it has "realistic lighting" regardless of how hard it all clashes with the aesthetic and how abysmal the performance is even compared to the official games, truly impressive double standards.

Great feedback on how you would do it better tho :p

Folks say this looks ugly but never suggest anything else

I don't need to be a chef to know something tastes like shit, just like I don't need to be a game developer to see something looks and runs like shit. You're just using the same old regurgitated arguments used to shut down dissenters of all kinds.

I mean it was a legit question so many people say it looks bad but don’t say how to do it better

I think it looks good so I also don’t understand and would like to understand more

But I guess that’s too much how dare I have a discussion on a forum !

Again, I'm not a game developer, it's not my role to tell someone how to do things better. But okay sure, if you want some pointers to not make it look like a generic Unity game (despite being made with UE5):
Drop the cast lighting, actually do proper shadow work, tone down the depth of field because it looks like the original demo for Octopath Traveler which looked like ass, tilt the sprites properly so they don't look like pieces of cardboard (that's not an aesthetic that's clearly someone who has no idea how these things work), and for the love of god drop the bloom, that never looks good in these HD-2D games, even Square Enix learned that early on !

In general really, drop all the ugly post-processing. It doesn't look good, it looks noisy and brings nothing good to the table.

Last edited by Osha,
As for the trailer itself...why use May, and not Brendan? That's just weird, considering she's meant to be Professor Birch's child (just like in the anime); Brendan's not supposed to be that. If it was me, I would have starred Brendan instead.
We know you don't like women, but she's literally a playable character. The anime came after the game. May is just as much a canon protagonist as Brendan who is just as much Birch's child as May is.
