Unless you bought your Evolution before December 26th(ish), 2007 you CAN use the FlashMe recovery key combo. TeamCyclops changed the recovery combo for the Evolution's firmware because it was interfering with FlashMe's.

any links to instructions on how to install flashme in a DSlite and then how to recover a bricked one using FlashMe?

Your DS will not be bricked. Stop being paranoid.

I hear ya buddy, and I trust your opinion. but the only reason I'm doing this is cuz I don't have much money, so a DS is a big investment for me. I can't afford to mess it up. also, the guy who got me into all this stuff is insisting I educate myself on all possible pitfalls ... it's very Obi Wan of him.

If I understand correctly, you're afraid someone will put a DS virus into a ROM, which in turn will brick your DS.

Not gonna happen, and bitch-slap whoever told you that.

I just tried "bricking" my DS (with FlashMe of course) and with v8a only the settings are lost. Yes, this includes your DS hardware ID, so that means new FCs on WFC.
Further experimentation with other versions I must do, however.
I can confirm that your antivirus will pick it up, but I still think it's nice to keep FlashMe on my R4.

However, it will also (aside from wiping firmware) brick GBAMPs, Supercard CFs, Neocrap products, and also attempt to erase a few sectors of any inserted CompactFlash memory. (Remember this was released in 2005!) It will not brick Slot-1 cards.
Thus, I can confirm that it will NOT brick your CycloDS Evolution, never ever.

The funny thing is... Someone could just write a new bricking program if they wanted to, and I bet the scanners wouldn't pick them up.

And yet my flashed DS Phat only lost its settings.
I didn't need to use my EZFlash 3-in-1 at all.
Yeah, it would be as simple as changing a few bytes, adding/removing some... but I'm totally safe from that.
DS Lite owners only have their settings wiped, even without FlashMe, so they're in the clear as well.

But maybe I should try all homebrew on No$GBA first, just to make sure, hmm?
