Yeh, it goes according to the game it would save as it usually would and I thin DSTWO also has an option to save whenever you want, correct me if Im wrong.

Correct. Games will save with a save file (.sav or .nds.sav) for each game. RTS works somewhat like a back-up, normally used when the game doesn't allow saving.

Like say, if you're playing against a boss on Super Mario Bros. and only have one life left, you can use RTS and load that back-up if you die. This will avoid you going through the whole stage again.
