Hardware Safe to use WiiConnect24 with modded Wii's?

I have just received my premodded Wii, and want to confirm a few things before I go crazy.

I notice that to use any internet based channels, WiiConnect 24 must be enabled. From what I have read, WiiConnect 24 automatically downloads updates and what not.

Is this dangerous in any way to a modded Wii? Will I be notified before any sort of firmware upgrade?

I've never had my Wii auto-update, you just get mail about updates and things.

If you want, you can turn off your Wii fully even with WiiConnect 24 enabled by holding onto the power button until the light turns red instead of orange.
