Like playing games in the dark? Not clever enough to know where the buttons are without looking? Well if this picture is any indication it looks like you're prayers have been answered!

A recent picture of EA's My Garden being shown at TGS on a 3DS system shows that the 3DS does indeed have backlit buttons! Though if true I hope you can turn it off as it would drain the battery somewhat.

Mark this as a rumour as that picture is actually a computer generated image, though its actually become the norm for many handheld devices and game controller to have backlit buttons.

The 3DS having backlit buttons would make it cooler and i wouldn't care if it drained the battery a little. I like it. Hopefully it is true.

Just added this to the post:

Seems like an unnecessary drain of battery life. Though it'd be nice to see Sony use backlit buttons from now on.

I hope that's not true.

Sure it looks nice, but it's pointless and a complete waste of battery. I don't care if it has that feature, but it better have the option to turn it off.

I don't think this is true, didn't notice any backlit 3DS' at E3 plus the article says the picture is computer generated...
Nintendo has always said that the E3 model wasn't final. While its true that the image is computer generated (hence the rumour tag and why I stated it in the OP) there could be a reason to why EA have shown it like that.

I honestly doubt it.

Nintendo takes a lot of pride in the battery life of its portables. I still think its one of the reasons why the original GameBoy did so well compared to the Gamegear or the Lynx or the Turbo Express, they all sucked down batteries so fast it wasn't funny.

Like others have said before me, I hope you can turn it off, if they do include that "feature".

If this is true, this is great as there wasnt any backlit on E3. That means that the model shown at the E3 wasnt final.

Do you guys understand that a few LED's would hardly take ANY battery life. And I mean it would only shave a few minutes off the battery life. Nothing major.

Here we go.

LEDs use a very small amount of electricity to function. They're incredibly efficient, and I'm assuming it's only going to be on in dark places (ambient light sensor?), so there really isn't that much of a tradeoff. Even then, a few minutes to ten minutes less battery life isn't going to affect much.
