Rom "versions"?!

Well, here it is.... the question of the year ....

I have always wondered - what do the bracketed letters/numbers in many ROM filenames (especially NES and SNES) mean? For example: [b1], [t1], [h1], [01], and [!]. I usually just use the ROM that has just [!], but I do not know if this is the best?

I have been wondering about this for a while now, and I am hoping someone can finally put this to rest for me.
