Posted as issue #6 for my Rock Band 3 for Wii Custom Songs GitLab repo:
I figured out that in order to force RB3 to read DLC from SD cards, I have to run it through an USB loader (specifically using CFG USB Loader), but when trying to play the game, my instruments are not detected.
I also have USB Loader GX, if that helps.

My Wii U is down (see this thread), so I can't test anything here that is vWii specific, but I can test using my Wii.

Use Hermes ios222/223 they have support for USB devices

I'll say it again

But I thought 249 and 250 were supposed to do the same thing. In fact, again from the same source:
The new cIOS D2X (from the guide linked above) already has a very high compatibility. It is probably not needed to follow the guide [for installing Hermes' cIOSes].
So, what's the difference? I'm not trying to be difficult; I just would like for you to explain in detail why I need these. I've had problems installing Hermes' cIOSes in vWii in the past, as I think it requires a Wii version that does not exist under Wii U's Wii mode.

EDIT: Is it possible that I misunderstood somehow? If I do in fact need these cIOSes, how do I install them under vWii?

Works now; from my comment on Issue 6 from my GitLab Repo:

If you have configured cIOS 249 with base IOS 56 and d2x version v10 beta52, then follow these steps:

  • Load USB Loader GX from Homebrew Channel. If you don't have it already, download it from SourceForge.
  • Select the gears. Choose Loader Settings. Scroll down and change the Loader's IOS and Game's IOS to IOS 249. Press the Home button on your Wii Remote and go back to the Homebrew Channel.
  • Plug in the devices you want to use. You can use a USB hub, if needed, but it doesn't have to be powered. Only the two USB ports in the back of the Wii U are usable with this method. The two in front do not respond to input.
  • Load USB Loader GX again and select the disc icon in the top right. Your instruments should now be recognized.
Do not unplug instruments during the game; running the game through USB Loader GX does not make the USB plug-and-play capable. You will be forced to leave the game and return to it for your instruments to work again.

Do not unplug any USB drives being used by the USB Loader! This will cause corruption in your loader, and possibly your game save.

Always backup your Wii saves for games you play through USB Loader GX, in the event that something happens to them. USB Loader GX can do this for you.

We arnt talking about vWii

I apologize. I didn't make myself quite clear. I was talking about vWii. I was hoping for a more universal solution (something for both Wii and vWii), which Hermes' cIOSes are not. I was going to try something on the Wii, and if it worked, try it on the Wii U once I had access to it again. Now that I've gotten a new Wii U and have gone back to hacking, I've been able to test what works and what doesn't, and now that I've discovered how to use cIOS 249 in USB Loader GX, as far as I'm concerned this discussion for me is closed. However, that doesn't mean others will not have problems, so I have it linked to my tutorial.

Then it's your fault for posting in the Wii section

I didn't know where to post this thread, actually. I just assumed that vWii hacks can be covered in general Wii hacks.

See, I really wanted to use vWii on the Wii U for hacks, so I kinda didn't actually want to use the Wii that much until the Wii U was fixed or replaced.
