Seems there's a cheaper more recent version of the Gold?

That card is not the same. The most important difference is it has a time bomb (it stops working after a couple years). They're cheaper because if you don't know that setting the system's clock back to before the time bomb occurs stops it from "exploding", you have to keep buying a new cart every few years to keep playing your games. That card also lacks the DS/NTRBoot switch found on the R4i Gold 3DS +. The R4i Gold 3DS + does not have a time bomb.
