Pigwooly: Video games on larger TVs only works when it's not a pixel based game but 3D. 3D models can always be enlarged, but pixels can't without losing quality. And honestly. The majority of DS games are pixel based.
Jumpman, you're a stand up guy, but you are being foolish.
I make 3d animation and video games for a living, so I certainly know the difference between 3d models which are vector based and pixel images which are raster. What we are talking about here is a small increase in the size of the screen. A small increase in the screen will NOT make it lose any noticeable quality (yes the pixels will be a little bigger, like I said in my post, but it'll be such a very small difference that it'll be hardly noticeable). Play a Super Nintendo game (raster image) on a 30 inch tv. Then go play it on a 31 inch TV and marvel at the lack of difference in quality. DVDs are also raster. You only start to notice the degradation in quality when you start changing the screen size by a lot.
Also, what you did with your Kirby demonstration is a perfect example of what will NOT happen with a larger DS screen.
To do it correctly you should have enlarged it by putting the image on two different monitors, one being slightly larger than the other, but both having the same resolution and then photographed each image with a camera. What you did instead was to change the resolution of the image to make it larger. This causes it to interpolate new pixels, in your example by using the nearest neighbor method. This degrades the quality because it's inventing new data.
The new DS screen would likely have the exact same number of pixels (IE the same resolution), just each pixel would be bigger. No interpolation no stretching. The reason why I used the example of a tv is to make sure no one would think what you just did with the Kirby image is how it would work. Take a standard def American or Japanese TV. If you play Super Mario world on a 30 inch tv screen it will have the exact same number of pixels as it will on a 65 inch tv screen. Each pixel is just larger. There is no interpolation involved.
Osaka asked you "did you just enlarge a jpeg? or take screen shots of 2 different screen sizes?" because Osaka had a feeling you missed the concept. Osaka is a little confused though, because taking screen shots on 2 differently sized screens would result in two identical images, because the resolutions would be the same. You would need to take the images with a camera to see the difference in size.
To sum it up, you are confusing screen size and resolution. Screen size and the number of pixels are 100% unrelated! This is why you can buy 720p TVs that are way bigger than 1080p ones and why DoS said
Haven't you seen the latest phones screens? The current standard resolution is 240x320, and there are phones with that resolution in 2.4", 2.6", 2.8", and so on. It looks fine in all of them, but of course that in every enlargement the pixels will be bigger, so there's a limit to where it would look good without clearly showing every pixel.
