I guess, because you start RA from hb-menue/sx os homebrew and not via the .nsp installed RA?

For details, check page 1 - 3. What's the deal with the Nintendo 64?

Nope, have definitely started with the NSP as recommended

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Do you run emuNAND?

Nope, latest Atmosphere running off latest Hekate+Fusee payload

Fixed, somehow-- I had installed my system from Kosmos 11.7 (current), but for some reason it said I had an update available when I checked the Updater. Now Mupen works fine, if slowly.

Hey y'all! Wondering if anyone can give me some insight as to why the Mupen64 core always crashes with a code 2168-0002 my Switch, while other cores run great (PCSX Rearmed runs better than on my PC!)

I have tried both exFAT and FAT32 formatting on my 64gb SD, both the latest Stable build and yesterday's Nightly for the base and core, running Retroarch from the NRO and the NSP, both GL and Switch graphics modes, every GUI, and multiple N64 ROMs. No difference. I always get a grey error screen, sometimes directly from a black screen after a speaker pop, sometimes after Retroarch quits and I get punted back to Atmosphere.
No you didn't.

On a side note.

I would give up even trying to run anything n64 related because the switch can not emulate n64 games near anything considered as playable.

So your wasting your time.

Wait until the bounty for the n64 core has been awarded and someone has worked on it and making it better so that it runs roms that are playable.

Is it at all possible to clean up the menus? I'd love to have games display as "Pokemon Red" "Pokemon Blue" and not "Pokemon - Red Version USA (SGB Enhanced)" but if I change the names the thumbnails go away. I also hate the sorting... I have Sonic and Knuckles, as well as sonic 1 -3 as well as the combo carts sonic 1-3 + Sonic and Knuckles and it creates a nightmare of a display sorting. Is there no way to have a Sort Title and still have the Thumbnail show up?
Sure. Just edit your playlist.lpl in which the game is.
Every entry in such a lpl file consists of 6 lines and the second line is the one you would want to edit.

It would be nice if it could do it automatically or even update when you manually goto scan the directory.

Tell that to my multiple OoT and MM play throughs and my 60 SM64 Stars.

PS: your request for more flexible database options completely disregards how those databases work. If you want to change something you can edit it yourself. A database is not magic.

Has anyone managed to play Metal Slug on RetroArch ? I tried different cores (fba, mame2003, mame2003-plus, mame2000, all updated to the latest build as of today) but my Switch always crash with error 2168-0002.

All versions of MS crash (I tried Metal Slug 1, 3, and X, maybe some others too), even tried different romset. The fact is, they work well in pFBA.

Smells like user error or exFAT nonsense. Some Mame cores have BIOS requirements. Check the wiki for the core you're using to find out what they are.

Your able to emulate oot and mm at speeds that are playable in the switch?

Hmmm

How because the current plugin and installer is terrible for nearly all n64 roms and even I've tried oot and it's frame rate is low.

As for database it's exactly how a database works, you set a directory and it scans and updates it's listing adding new content.

You shouldn't have to manually edit the database file when it has a scan directory feature.

That's the hole purpose of the feature but it's broken.

You can scan directory once and it will compile a list, if you later add to that directory and scan again it won't update. That is what the database is for, to create a list of data.

For whatever reason the problem was with my neogeo.zip bios (which worked fine in pFBA...).

In case anyone wonder I downloaded the latest UNIVERSE bios, renamed the rom file to asia-s3.rom and replaced it in my neogeo.zip file. After that Metal Slug 3 and X are working with the fba core

Sure but how should RetroArch know, that you want
Pokémon - Red Version (SGB enhanced)
to be named
Pokémon Red
?

There's nothing that could tell RetroArch your prefered naming convention.
You could only use the "replace all" feature of an editor to achieve that.
If you don't know how, drop the playlist file here and tell me what you want.

I tried that before posting here and the thumbnails all disappeared

Also when I opened the .lpl in word editor it is a freaking mess. There's no formatting. It was just a massive block of inline text... Is there an easier way to read it?
