Hacking Retail and Digital overwriting question

So I have the tool on my 3DS that transfers the save of the retail game and overwrites it to the digital and deletes the retail one.

So, what my question is that since I have a powersaves and Retail X and Digital X, can I backup the retail X on the powersaves and then transfer the save to the digital game and then restore the backup to my Retail X since I saved it?

yeah should work ok....fairly certain, but no promises, not done it myself XD
