I have a 360 I'm using as a WMC extender (I have a HTPC with a Ceton card, and it streams live TV and my DVD library to the 360 in another room over my LAN). I was thinking about getting it setup with a Coolrunner so I could play backups off of a USB drive. I know I can't get on Live, but will it have any negative effects from being on my LAN to stream the HTPC?
On a side note, I remember when I first got it it did a search and downloaded some codecs to play video files. Hasn't happened again in months. But if it does ask to download codecs, would that get me banned? Thanks for any info!

If your console isn't banned and you only want to play games off off an external then you should get an Xkey.

That way you can still keep XBL for updates etc.

Way simpler then a complete RGH.
I think the MCE function still works but since the 360 requires more cooling (hacked) to keep it alive, it's not that great.

2.0.14719.0. And I've been using it as an extender since March. I made a profile and got on so I could install the media update, and have just been using it as an extender since then.

Then it's still RGHable.

You can RGH it to obtain the CPUkey and FCRT.bin if you have a Liteon 1175.
Iirc Hitachi 0500 also is emulated by the Xkey but I'm not entirely sure with it.

Anyway if you want to keep it as a RGH then you'll have to install an Coolrunner as you already said.
You can Dual NAND it with a Cyngos or Xecuter DemoN.
This will allow you to go back to a non hacked state to gain updates etc.
Be careful tho not to keep any homebrew on the HDD.
Also don't sign in with your profile you use to sign in with on your RGH state.

I seems since it hasn't updated, the extender isn't going online, just over the Lan. I just don't want to accidentally have it connect to the internet. I wasn't sure what the best way to avoid that would be, but figured it would be along the lines of firewalling live, or somehow blocking the Xbox's internet access at the router.

Just to add my 2 cents. I have a dual NAND (Cygnos), Live/RGH (Coolrunner rev. B), unlocked 0272 PCB (Matrix Freedom PCB), with a Star Trek color changing LED casemod. All of it was self installed. I stream all of my media from my library on both NANDs. You can block the RGH one both ways mentioned above (I use both parental controls and Dashlaunch hacks). Neither or both together block media streaming in any way. Even when using WMP 12's media sharing capabilities.

Oh, one last thing. There's only 1 video update isn't there? So if I downloaded it back in March, I'm good?
