Deleted or lost through corruption is easy enough to try and fix- my two chosen programs for this are recuva
http://www.piriform.com/recuva (made by the same people as cccleaner and defraggler)
and TestDisk
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk (they also do a nice program aimed at photos http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec although it does all files just so you know when you inevitably get called to recover such things when an associate deletes them).

Quality wise it is probably six of one, half a dozen of another- situations where either one would grab a file or two the other skipped but in general I go for recuva as it is easier to punch into doing what you want.

From what you say though it might well be overwritten and although I would not trust your data to be safe from the NSA/GCHQ/your chosen sigint agency you might well be beyond simple software. Give it a spin with some of the tools above if you want (the way flash memory works means it is still slightly possible) but I would not hold my breath. If this is the case it looks like you will be spending some time with pokesav.
