Seeing that soldering it not a problem now, what would be the recommended/best mod-chip to get now? For a D2C?

I tottaly agree ! For DMS/D2A/D2B, yaosm right now is unbeatable ! Bell realy does an amazing job !

JTAG upgrade will always be possible, as you have to upgrade the chip connecting it to a PC, thus not using the Wii at all.
