Hmm Never played the 1st Valkyria Chronicles yet but will take a look at it. I'm thinking about looking in to sol trigger.

You don't need to play the previous games to enjoy Valkyria 3. Sol Trigger is okay, too, but it's more like a dungeon crawler that might get repetitive for some people.

Edit: Almost forgot, try Last Ranker. I enjoyed that quite a bit, although you need to know Japanese fairly well to progress in the game.

One more: Summon Night 5. I only played the first few hours myself but it seemed fine, nothing amazing though.
