Well Race Driver: Create and Race, is out, and it feels just about right to me, so I'm probably going to be playing this one until codemasters releases the next one. It's just arcadey enough to deal with the digital controls, but a sim at heart.

I'm starting this topic up to share thoughts, questions, tips, friend codes, and all other things race driver.

I'll start off with a few basic tips:
Brake before entering a corner--this isn't need for speed here, 150mph entry=no turn.
every car handles differently especially when braking in the corner itself. Just be aware.
Do time trials. You get 250 points for breaking your own record and 10,000 more if it's a global top10 when uploaded
Use headphones when in hood view--there's no rearview mirror and this lets you know what's behind without looking
Get a rumble pack when in hood view. You may be on the grass, and not even know.
Try tapping the steering buttons when you don't want tires to go (ovals)
Skim the grass on the inside of corners to slow you a bit and bring the car around if you're a little fast--it's usually slower than doing it right, but better than leaving the track.

Oh, and does anybody know where the heck I find my friend code on this thing?

Yeah they made it really confusing, here's what you do to get to your friend code.

Multiplayer->Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection->Friend Codes

In friend Codes Press Y to see the input friend code stuff, then press Y again and it'll show you your code.

Do time trials.  You get 250 points for breaking your own record and 10,000 more if it's a global top10 when uploaded

So could you start out doing a really crap time and slowly improve on it each time to keep getting 250 points?
I don't believe I've ever tried, but I believe so as long as you exit time trial mode and reenter it again after setting each new local lap record it will allow multiple 250 point accumulation. More importantly, after you drop off the top ten, I suspect you can get another 10,000 for getting back on it again for the same event. Really you shouldn't waste time with local scores when a lot of the global boards don't even have 10 times posted yet.

I set a lot of records with semis and race trucks last night for 10,000 a pop, and some of the more popular cars don't have any scores on their less popular courses. It takes around 1-2 minutes to get a top10 oval score in a race truck for 10k pts.

Note that the lack of record lap data is true at the time of posting, so pull yourself up to the points buffet before time runs out, and bother with the local lap times later for personal growth. It's amazing how little I care about earning 250 points when I'm sitting on over 100,000

Well, you got a fan here..

I have never been a fan of racing sim or racing in general (although I have played Grand Turismo on my PS2 for a while), but this game just feels good to me. By just typing this, I want to play it again. *opens DS*. 'The first few races were really crap, though I can't really say that the steering didn't work (like I read a lot from people who played Race Driver), but I just wasn't used to breaking before making a turn.. Yeah I know.. But now i'm getting better and better, and learn about the different vehicles. My question is,
what kind of vehicles are in the whole game? And are there any Formula 1 like cars?

reaperman, thanks for the tip.

edit: actually how do you view the top 10 for each track? I had a quik
look on the wifi leadboard but it seemed like it was just one overall chart

I think you were in the right place. You go to 'extras' and 'records' then 'nintendo wifi connection' and pick a championship. Now that you've narrowed the car selection, left/right views the individual tracks in the championship, and up/down scrolls the list. Though at this point, if you pick anything besides the clio or koenig gt and score a local high score, you have a darn good chance of it being a record. Even clios and koenigs have a decent chance on some of their tracks.

Ok thanks see it, I had gone to records but didn't see Wifi there so was just looking in the multiplayer/wifi area where it just shows the top 8.

edit: heh 10,000 points to me already, thanks again

Is there an ips patch for the rumble to work with the 3-in-1 yet?
3-in-1 rumbles fine for me with an r4 in slot 1 and rudolph's expansion pak tool v1.9.
what do you use in slot 1? does it always require that games are patched? I'm lost, since I really only know the R4 side of things.

Oh, and does anybody know where the heck I find my friend code on this thing?

Thanks for the tips mate, this will make things a lot easier for me

yeah, I wish they had included some open wheel racers, and a rear view (or the arrow indicators) in the hood view. but i was playing this game all weekend long, this is excatly what I was waiting for (for a racer on the DS). i'll take the tips about racing time trials, i'd like some easy points to unlock more track editor pieces.

Adore this game......considering this is only a 1st generation release for Codies on the DS, imagine what the future releases will be like. Should at the very least open up the racing genre for the DS.

Would like to see the guys behind Forza or GT attempt this, but obviously will not happen. Hoping also that Ferrari Challenge will pick up the baton and run with it. A good F1 game would be welcomed, also someone should see sense and give the license for F1 to Codemasters.

Also while we are at it, Codies need to bring Sensible Soccer to the DS

for those who get to tier 5 in the world tour, the "easy steering" cheat is unlocked. (no your progress and scores are not saved when using it) Of course, by tier 5 nobody's interested in easy steering anymore.

It leaves the game feeling like all the other arcade racers, and I'm pretty sure this feature was included to show everybody how fast this game would be forgotten if it played like everything else. I didn't make through one race before getting bored and turning it off. I just didn't feel like I could die with every corner anymore.

Has anybody finished world tour and made it to the pro tour yet? I keep getting distracted by wifi, time trials and the track builder.

My friend code is:
541277770764

Still no sign of the game in stores. The gamestop guy probably thinks I'm insane by now...

edit: oh, and not to spread rumors, but create&race developer firebrand is working on 3 'undisclosed' projects. It looks like they have only 2 games currently to their name--the other one being a DS cartoon network racing game that I'll probably give a spin (not that I'm expecting a totally accurate simulation on that one). Since they specialize in DS driving games, it looks like some more fun may be headed this way. Here's hoping for race driver 2

Whats yours Madkatz? I'll prob be on a bit later. Ive not gone on Wifi yet trying to get used to the handling so I don't get killed online.
