Only http://www.linfoxdomain.com/nintendo/ds/ is inportant to know for the firmware, and https://gbatemp.net/threads/ds-i-3d...menu-replacement.472200/page-759#post-9960436 to replace the original menu.
The FirmWare is what makes the compatibility, the other is a kernel addon which makes it up to date with today's game compatibility.
Before you claim it not to work, use a normal DS for it nefer got any updates and set the date of this DS back to November 21, 2004 for there might be a timer in the original kernel.

You'll need a Firmware that works, and a kernel that works to be able to overwrite the menu with twilight menu++ the kernel can be outdated though, only the boot file is needed to link twilight menu++.

You've found the latest firmware updater also... i couldn't find it. just only he doesn't have the 3DS version of thier card... so i hope that will not mess things up.
YS-menu is a little outdated now compared to twilight menu++, so i wouldn't bother YS-menu.
Twillight menu++ on the other hand is more complex to setup.
Ya its now up to him what he want to use, the original Kernel/OS, YS-Menu which is very minimalistic or TWLmenu++ thats offers a lot of possibilitys.
