Hacking R4i Question

I owned an original R4 long ago but when they went under I bought an Acekard 2i and had it since but recently Acekard no longer updates so I bought an R4i Gold but it hasn't arrived yet. How do you update an R4i gold, is it just like Acekard where you gotta use a DS with older firmware or do you just update the kernel? Can someone shed some light on this before I get it in the mail?

You only need to use an older DS if you were stupid and let your DSi/3DS update beyond what your flash cart could support.

Attention: just enter wood r4 v1.56 for r4i gold and click start.
Choose help and you can get an information window to show the 3DS & NDSi system your card can support.
If it can suppor 3DS4.5.0-10, you do not need to update it.
