Homebrew R4

I'm going to buy the R4 card but I don't know what games won't work with it.

I want to get Pocket Physics, Phidias, and World of Sand. Will these work?

P.S I'm new to homebrew gaming.

don't get the r4. it was good in its time (i have one), but now it is outdated and overpriced. get the acekard 2, or cyclo evolution.

answering your question, almost all (if not all) homebrew works on the r4, and all games (except for the hulk, and a few random ones) work.

DON'T BUY A R4. EVER

Srsly, there are like hundreds of better carts out there that can do way more than a R4 could. R4 is outdated, and almost dead. Getting a R4 at this point will make you regret it in about a week.

Get a Acekard 2 from DealExtreme for 23 dollars, if you're on low budget. It's about twice as better than a R4, much cheaper.

Welcome to GBATemp.
Don't get an R4 if you don't have to. There is no more firmware updates.
Get an CycloDS is you have the money, 55 dollars about. If you can't get the, get an Supercard DS-One. Trust me, those are the two best cards on the market.

Someone else post somewhere cheaper to get a CycloDS, I've seen cheaper, but I don't know where. And both have SDHC support which means you can get MicroSD cards 4GB and over.

So, you want us to recommend a cart that's pretty much dead with no official support, nor are there any real R4s being sold anymore, at a high price, while you can get a cart WITH a support team, with real carts sold, at a low price?

Even if you LOVE the R4, would you get another one if it broke right now? I really think not.

I agree with everyone stay away from the R4 , get a Cyclo if you can as it has the best features and the best support. If you want to spend a little less you can get a ak2 it doesn't have features like real time save that the cyclo has but its a great card if you just want to play games.

I believe people are well aware enough that it does what it needs to do, but considering the price, and due to the downhill streak they have been, I wouldn't get one myself. I actually own an R4 and I certainly do think that compatibility works fine for my needs. There is no need to confuse anyone. There is no need for this many people to buy the R4 thinking that it is as great as it used to be. Stop confusing the buyer. I say buy something else. When it comes to this, it all depends on the person who is buying. People often recommend other flash carts for their support, compatibility, features, and price. The R4 has hardly any of that anymore. Though I cannot stop you, I really think that it should stay dead.

EDIT: AND AGAIN! I believe that enough people already know that the R4 is enough so that it does the job.

I suggest not getting the R4 and if you already have one, you really should think about getting a new flashcard, there are plenty of flashcards out there that are far cheaper and have better support, compatibility and features. The R4 has stopped being manufactured which means that it has reached the end of its life. You can expect only minor updates if any at all from the R4 team though right now, it doesn't look promising.

Several games, even some that came out over a year ago don't work on the R4. Also many newer games coming out have problems on the R4 either not running the game at all or the game is extremely buggy and freeze often. Also games with the new save type are not supported on the R4 so any games coming out with the new save type will not save. Also there are a few homebrew apps that have trouble on the R4 as well.

The R4 overall, is extremely limited and buggy. The cheat system has many flaws and can cause games to freeze or simply nt work when using cheats on some games. Also a few cheat types are not supported leaving you with a good many cheats not working on the R4. Also the R4 limits the number of cheats and games that gets displayed on the cheats page.

So basically, the R4 is on life support and has been for quite a long time now. Many newer flashcards have surpassed the R4 in many ways, including compatibility. The R4 is showing its age, thanks to hardware limitations (The R4 Firmware not being flashable), features like SDHC support and many others can never be added. The R4 was a fine cart when it first came out, but now its just an old, over prices flashcard.

The R4 has many clones as well, some supporting SDHC cards, these are not enhanced R4s nor improved, they simply had the hardware added to support SDHC cards while the loader/firmware they use is the exact same as the real R4DS byte to byte. This means that the clones have the same problems of the real R4DS and if the R4DS stops getting updated, so will the clones. So the R4 Upgrade V2, N5, R4DS III and so on are just all cheat knockoffs and should be avoided at all costs as the R4 Team is planning one last update that will brick the clones and possibly the DS that they are on.

Also I would like to point out, that I own an R4 myself and got it when it was one of the best flashcards on the market. Sadly thats not true anymore.
