So I was eyeing the possibility of getting a New3DS XL, for screen size and extra power (although there's not many games using that yet). I have a Zelda OOT 3Ds that I don't want to get rid of.

So I was planning on keeping the New 3DS on OFW as much as possible, and then using the Zelda 3DS for a flash cart or custom firmware. I haven't researched this yet, since it seems a bit confusing on the various brands of cards, and don't know what CFW offers.

I've owned flash carts for GBA and NDS for the same reasons : I buy the games I really want, but sometimes I just want to try them, or not sure they are worth the price point sometimes. And fan-made patches (translations often) can't be played any other way either usually. A few games never got a US release either (Hotel Dusk sequel for example), so I got the chance to play it thanks to my Flashcarts.

So wondering what is the current state of things in the nutshell, just looking at pointers : Is there downgrading for the firmware, custom firmware better than flash carts, or which flashcart seems to be the best? What firmware should I be if I wanted to do any of these?

Obviously I'd stop making updates for my unit, and I'm aware that online play would probably not work, neither are DLC. That's why I'd keep an updated New3DS on hand.

If you can find a n3ds at fw 9.2 or earlier cfw is far superior to a flashcart. It offers free eshop games and physical games not just physical like a flashcart, and is free. The only downgrade methods are using a hardmod with a backup from your specific system or from 4.x - 9.2 you can downgrade to 4.x with gateways website.

Thanks, but I was looking at downgrading the normal 3DS, not the N3DS :P That's why I was wondering what methods are currently existing and my limits on them.

if there is no way to downgrade my 3DS, then I've got to wait for a method to appear on my current version, it just takes more time. That's why I was wondering if Flashcarts were more flexible on that side. Either way it needs to go through some 'hole' in their security. I've done enough PSP CFW to understand that much.

Sky3ds is the only flashcart that works on current firmware because it emulates the actual cartridge. They just released a new orange button model.

to downgrade you either need a backup you previously made and to hard-mod your system or a o3ds (non-2ds) on 9.2 or lower

to find a good n3ds use this guide as a reference point https://gbatemp.net/threads/n3ds-xl-firmware-by-version-number.381479/

for 3ds roms you basically have 3 choices
    1. sky 3ds $80-90usd works on any fw version sky 3ds requires you to set up a private header on your games or risk a ban from nintendo plays 3ds roms (including cubic ninja (ninjhax))

    2. gateway $40usd works on 9.2 or lower gateway uses its own cfw in order to run and requires you to set up a private header on your games or risk a ban from nintendo plays 3ds roms cfw side allows for .cia (installable) roms (3ds/gba/gb(c)/nes/sega/dsiware/3dsware) and/or homebrew apps (emulators/custom themes/region free/ect.) also emunand a emulated clone of your 3ds that you can freely update to access current nintendo online features

    3. cfw free works on 9.2 or lower allows for .cia (installable) roms (3ds/gba/gb(c)/nes/sega/dsiware/3dsware) and/or homebrew apps (emulators/custom themes/region free/ect.) also emunand a emulated clone of your 3ds that you can freely update to access current nintendo online features
