What Bernhard..

Please check to make sure that it is fully turn off, weatMod.. to be safe. Here:

  1. To display the Power Menu on Nintendo Switch, press and hold the POWER Button for at least three seconds.
  2. Select "Power Options," then choose to either turn off, restart, or set the console to Sleep Mode. Important: ...
  3. To exit the Power Menu, press the B Button or the HOME Button. Settings.
thanks but what about the joycons? is there a secret way to power them down completely so that touching the buttons does not make them come on ?
or is it safe to store them long term the way they are, i know there is that "secret button" but all pressing it does is make the lights go off but once you press a button they come back on

Maybe by desyncing them first?
But they'll still discharge relatively quickly.

Well.. The only way to turn it off and turn it on (aka powering it on or off) is from the power button on the Switch. To turn it completely off you hold the power button for about 3 to 4 seconds and this should appear.

Sleep Mode
Power Options (Suspended Software will be closed)- Click this option to reveal Restart and Power Off
Close

This didn't really needed to be explained since you probably know this already but it helps with the explanation.

If the system is powered off, the only way to turn it back on is the power button on the Switch itself. There is no way to turn it on from being powered off with any of the controllers.

What everyone has been mentioning is being able to use the controllers to wake up the Switch from putting it in Sleep Mode. You push the home button on the Pro Controller, Right Joy-Con or the power button on the Switch to wake it up from Sleep Mode. Credit by someone.

If you want to keep your battery in good shape when not using it for long periods of time, keep it at a charge between 40% and 70%, fully draining and fully charging Li-ion batteries reduces their lifetime.

General advice for any device with a battery: When not being used for a longer period make sure that it is not 100% charged. 50% is the perfect balance to store the device safely without worrying about the battery.
