with the game cards are the game saves stored on the game card for example super smash bros ultimate if i get the digital version will the save be on the system or is it on the card only.

You mean the actual, game card? No they are not saved on the game card but the actual system. For example, if you sell your game card and buy a new one it will be at the same progress.
