Softmod Guide - Updated.
Prowler did this.

Newbie Guide - Updated.
I did this.

F.A.Q. - Updated.
I did this. Merged the newbie guide with it since both are shorter now that 6.x is a lot easier.

Plugin Thread - ???
I think we need a plugin thread. Since there's so many plugins and there's like 3 plugins to do each task, somebody should make and update a list.
Any volunteers? Here's the info from the F.A.Q, for whoever wants to use it in the guide.
  • Q - What's a plugin and how do I use it?
A - A plugin is a .PRX file that adds additional functionality to your PSP. They can cheat, take screenshots, save/load state, stream video, remap your controls, and lots more. A plugin's installation instructions usually require you to place it's PRX file into your /seplugins/ folder, and to modify one or more of the text files in that folder. There's three text files, one for VSH, one for GAME, and one for POPS. You edit whichever file for the section you want the plugins to work under, like this.
    ms0:/seplugins/joysens.prx 1
    ms0:/seplugins/RemoteJoyLite.prx 0

The first line is for the joysens.prx plugin, and the 1 indicates it's enabled. The second line is for the RemoteJoyLite.prx plugin, and the 0 means it's disabled.
  • Q - When will plugins be activated?
A - A plugin will be activated the next time it's section (VSH/GAME/POPS) starts.
  • Q - What are VSH, GAME, and POPS?
A - VSH refers to the PSP's native OS/Menus. GAME refers to PSP games (and hombrew). POPS refers to PS1/PSX games.
  • Q - A plugin isn't working for me on a 6.x firmware, what do I do?
A - Things changed between 5.x and 6.x, not all plugins work on 6.x. Sometimes you can find an updated version of a plugin that will work, but other times you'll have to use a different plugin to do what you want.
  • Q - I have a lot of stuff, can I organize it?
A - If you want to rearrange the order of things in the game list, you can use PSP Content Manager.
If you want to sort things into folders, use the Game Categories Light plugin. Add/enable the plugin, then make folders in your /ISO/ and /PSP/GAME/ folders, named /CAT_(category name)/, and place your stuff into them. The Game Categories plugin can work three different ways, be sure to check the added options in your system settings to customize it the way you like. Not all homebrew works properly when placed into a category folder (or even when using certain category view types), though.
  • Q - Can I enable/disable plugins without having to hook up to a PC and edit that file each time?
A - If you're fully-hacked, then yes. Shut the PSP fully down (hold the on/off switch until it cuts off), then turn it back on and immediately hold the R trigger to access the recovery menu. You can toggle plugins from there.

Firmware Comparison - In Progress
I vote for Xist to do this one.

A thread comparing various firmwares and such, so people have a place to see about 5.00 M33 and such.

You know the plugin one make a good tutorial competition entry for whoever thinks they can do it well...

Just so you know, SOME of the Kratos Red PSP 2000s also are older mobo models. You said the Madden on can have either, so can Red.
You sure on this? There were TWO God Of War limited editions released, one was a 2000 and one was a 3000 (and 6.x can be installed on any 2000 mobo).

yeah. they came out at the same time-ish and I have personally put 5.50 GEN on several red GOW 2000 models.

Yup. You just have to get the hen for the fw you find on it.

False.

He could get a pre-owned PSP with newer firmware which can't play ISOs.

Plus stores sometimes sell pre-owned stuff as new.

True, he can get a pre-owned. I didn't think of that. Though I don't think he will be getting pre-owned.

You're saying to him that you can play backups with the firmware he finds it on, which is false because newer firmware can't play backups.

Anything is possible.

Yes, yes, I know. I should have said that "You should try and find a psp that has a compatible fw for hacking." Then I would have said to get the CFW that came with the psp.

I know I could have said that better.

Xist is working on the comparison one and the bulk is complete.

Just need somebody to make a plugins one, but it should be somebody that can edit it every so often if a new interesting plugin comes out.
I'd be willing to try, may take awhile though to track down each one, but I'll do my best.

Though what would be needed though exactly?

An explanation on what plugins are and how to use them, and then a list of some of the most popular and best plugins for both 5.x and 6.x firmwares, listing alternatives for each function (for example there's 3 or 4 cheat plugins and multiple ways to do screenshotting).

damm, and here i was working on the comparison one aswell......
oh well, i'll just leave it since i dont think mine will be any good compared to xist's one.
Although i might do the plugin one now if i have time.....
