This new firmware improves the operating stability of some PS3 format software, and changes the XMB item SaveData Utility (minis) to [SaveData Utility(minis/PSP)]. This is all optional though, you don't have to update.

Are you sure the update is optional? I wasn't able to sign in to PSN when I didn't update.
