I think you would need USBeXtreme to run ISOs off an external drive. However, for a phat PS2, an internal drive with HDLoader might work better as you'd get better speeds and compatibility (according to what I've read).

To rip PS2 games, you just need a computer with a regular DVD drive and any software that can make ISOs out of DVDs. I use Imgburn to rip mine.

I would not recommend ripping the games via the PS2, it can wear down your laser.

You will need a DVD Burner drive to rip ISOs from a PS2 DVD.

what?

no it doesnt
its built into HD Loader
I use it all the time

HD Loader v0.8c + 120GB Maxtor 7200RPM
PS2 v50001 (v10) NTSC USA

the computer tends to corrupt the hard drive about 20% of the time when using WinHIIP
I dont trust it, after all the times I had to recover all the games on there

You need the PS2 laser to rip an ISO from a game. Therefore, it strains the laser during the process.

any tests or proof

compared to just playing a game regularly?

if you do it on your computer then your just gonna strain the computers dvd drive laser so what difference does it make

Shitty PS2 lens maybe? Just hazarding a guess towards his claim and not backing it up entirely.

But yeah, HDLoader with an internal drive should be considered the ONLY option when you have a "Phat" PS2 (I hate that term). Now I haven't looked at this shit in ages but if you're downloading games an external enclosure with the right programs is handy for getting the games on the hard drive straight from the PC. I'm no expert in this portion just cause I've been out of it for years.

Rripping an ISO from a game disc with the PS2's laser, strains the laser more than just playing a game.

It does make a difference, the strength of a PC optical drive laser is very superb, much more powerful than that of a PS2. Ripping an ISO from a PS2 game disc wears a PC drive little.

All lasers will wear down over time regardless, it's natural, but some things can speed up the process. Which includes ripping a PS2 ISO from a PS2 game disc with the PS2's laser.

well the point im trying to make is your doing a lot more things
now as I have a v10 ps2, this was the last ver of the fat ps2 and they fixed the laser problem
so it doesnt really affect me

but if you have one of those unlucky 30001 ps2's I can see

but your first have to rip the ISO to your computer
you have to make sure it does it right and doesnt produce any flaws in the ISO
now you have to remove your HDD from the PS2 and hook it up your comp in slave mode
now you have to put the ISO on your HDD using WinHIIP, (now this is where most of the problems arise)
sometimes the MBR for HD Loader will corupt using WinHIIP and the whole drive must be restored and repaired
this has happened about 5 times to me already, and its not a good feeling to know that there might be a small chance that all the games on the HDD may be gone

You can also put ISOs on your HDD using FTP, although it is ten times slower than WinHllP.

I use Wiihiip 1.7.5
A network adapter
An 80GB Maxtor Drive
A softmod install via 8Mb memory card (And an original PSX game)
The softmod uses HDloader
And of course a PS2 Phat

And my set up works flawless.

Also there is a compatibility list of games and hard drives that work with this setup you would have to follow.

I have a modchipped slimline PS2 so in theory, if I download the USBextreme ISO and run it, will it work well with my external HDD?

I also have a chipped slim, and I have tried the USB theory with a 80GB usb laptop drive.
I used USB extreem and had it recognize the drive but could not go any further for some odd reason?
Any game I loaded that was compatible would not load, so I put that project at the back of my list for now.

My current completed projects where:
PSP Phat + Pandora creation = Success
PS2 + Softmod exploit + HDD = Success
PS2 Slim + Mod Chip = Success
Wii + Modchip = Success
NDS + R4 = Success
Xbox + 120GB HDD + UnleashX Softmod = Success
Xbox Controller cable creation to USB for PC to transfer Action replay codes to Xbox Via memory card = Sucsses

Working on:

Wii SDcard VC exploit
PS2 Slim + External USB HDD
