Gaming Proxifier Question

When you're using a proxy (which is what hides your IP), the proxy itself (which is somebody else's computer on the internet) can see every thing you do online. It all passes through their computer. Everything you send out and everything you get back.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_proxy

So while a proxy may hide your real IP from the site you visit, the proxy itself has your real IP and more.

Whatever fears you may have about IP addresses, name them so I can get rid of them. Most people don't know what an IP address actually is, let alone what it's used for.

Awesome, I'll 'try' not to hassle you too much

.

Program Related- Paranoid maybe? :L (Proxy Type: Socks 5)
So this program has what it calls 'Proxification Rules' which i am currently assuming lets me decide which program i allow connect through the proxy.
Right now I'm allowing the Google Chrome browser which contains No user names, passwords etc. since i didn't import it from firefox).

You won't have to read the stuff below if you look at pics xD
It states
QUOTE said:
''Here you can select Proxification Mode and create Proxification Rules.
Option 1 says
Process All except the following (programs) + manually proxified
Option 2 (I selected this one)
Process Only the following + manually proxified

It also has 'Name Resolution' which notes-
QUOTE"If you don't have a DNS service Proxifier can resolve hostnames through Proxy Server "Proxifier cannot get real IP addresses through Proxy Server. Thus it uses "fake" IP addresses that are valid only during Proxifier runtime.
Then gives me the options of
-Choose the mode automatically
-Locally
-Try Locally then Remotely
-Remotely

As for IP Addresses
Can they be tracked back to a pinpoint location? or just an approximation
When you connect to a Proxy server, Do they know your Internal IP or your External IP?
Does the server see every page and letter , every distinct detail including passwords that are stars clearly? or do they have to go throuh all their techy stuff?
Also once i disconnect from the proxy, they stop seeing my stuff right?

The one thing that is leaving me paranoid is the question of can this proxy server see what i am doing besides what i allow connected through.
Or have i got this all wrong and that this program allows all programs connect to the proxy server.
Also can i just use this proxy to connect through to 'a' website then disconnect from it?

Thanks a bunch Rydian.

I'm asking WHY you're using a proxy in the first place. What are you scared of? Using a proxy is actually less safe than most things people use them to get away from, since the proxy sees everything.

An IP address can only be tracked to a general city. It's actually tracking the ISP's closest router, not your home address. Sometimes the ISP's closest router isn't even in your city, but in the next city over. Yes, an IP address IS tied to your home address, but that info is only held in your ISP's databases, and they're not giving that info out to anybody except the police or FBI.

Any proxy server you use can see everything you do through it, that's why I'm questioning your reasons for using one in the first place. Using one to keep what you're doing a secret... that doesn't work. That's why people who go on 4chan and talk about using proxies to do shit get laughed at.

I'm just paranoid lols, its one of my many faults

Can they see stuff i do after i disconnect from them?
I would like to use it to get to us steam's sales for lower price

im a tight ass.
I also intend to use it to play some games that are only allowing certain IPs.

edit far too late but I will leave the post up.

Simple answer- proxies are just part of the web anonymity and simply by themselves they do not confer much. Likewise not all proxies afford anonymity (see http://devcentral.f5.com/weblogs/macvittie...06/02/3323.aspx among other things- this and various more elaborate variations on this are how say location locked video sites can tell you are behind a proxy and one of the methods by which file hosters can still see it is you).

This then also scales- if you want to go toe to toe with your ISP or the DSD (to save others a look pretty much the Australian equivalent of the NSA or GCHQ) or someone like that it takes a bit more effort than hiding from a little website (equally that little website may well have an easier time of things depending on how you play it) or if you want to say hide from google that is a different matter again.

There are attacks on NAT so as to be able to find internal IP addresses) and similarly the way NAT works allows for some stuff. Something like http://www.auditmypc.com/internal-ip-address.asp as a start although these are closer to real attacks rather than network "feature" like the X-Forwarded-For stuff I linked in the previous paragraph (they also double up as effective bypass methods for proxy chains like TOR- I recall a similar attack on torrents as well).

Two videos (each quite long and very technical) that raise many interesting points.

I suggest you figure out what you are hiding from, what you can afford to lose/spend to do what you need to do and what the risks of failing are.

If you want to look at porn (assuming it is not an a-cup model of course) and hide it from parents/network admins I would go a different way entirely- liveCDs, privacy modes, neighbour routers as appropriate.

If you want to hide from the MPAA/RIAA equivalents just buy in some usenet, file hosters or if you must use torrents a seedbox.

I could go on but you get the idea.

Thanks Fast, that cleard up alot of things
"Proxification rules" in the proxifier program if i set that to only allow a certain program (browser in this case) does the proxy server only see my activity on the browser?
(This would be assuming you've come across proxy programs like this)

Edit: Just checked the site it says that by manual configurating i can choose which of my games/programs connect through the proxy servee and which connect directly.
Jut need a confirmation if this is possible.

By the looks of things yeah it seems to be application specific. I am not sure how this program works (windows APIs for various things like this, it might act as a glorified firewall and so on and so on) and possibly by definition it can not get local traffic (you are probably sitting behind a router- it will not allow local traffic into the world and even then every hop after that should also disallow it).

What you seem to want though is a VPN (try and make it a private one rather than a public one- it might geolocate to the US or somewhere but if it is the known exit point of a paid for a big VPN network/service........). If you have got a relative/friend say in the US and the US has a sale- stick something like http://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/teamviewer_portable on their machine as well as yours and your exit point will appear in the US. The previous program is ultra simple so you will want a better method if you end up doing it properly (that will probably involve port forwarding and router rules though so hold off for now). Do also note many sites like this will also expect you to pay in the local currency and depending on how invasive the DRM is for your platform of choice (it can get quite invasive) it might trigger something there- I have not seen this on games but I have seen it on some very high end software.

Yes, i'm behind a router.
I've got a friend over in the US; I'll see if i can sort something out with him, Thanks.

@Rydian
Yeah, im usually around the 300s

I have found a program called AOL, it apparently has its own proxy & browser, but seeing as i cant manually control all my connections, nts- Stay Away xD

Many applications that access the internet will have proxy settings.

As for pings I was thinking it was more just a DRM (one of those always active internet implementations) and initial purchase thing.
