I wish there were hardlinks. We could do some serious wizardry with that.

Hardlinks and symlinks are the best tool ever invented. :)

Just a small note: if this goes through, please keep paths short.
Preferably under 8 characters or so, its a pain to type entire paths (tab isn't always a solution), for those of us that like to copy stuff around from the command line

You know there's a reason why the "Long File Name" extension for FAT32 is there?

Yet another poll for those with an opinion on the matter: https://www.strawpoll.me/10666753

(/3ds/appdata/ vs /3ds/data/) Very minor thing, just curious.

I think "data" is still understandable and shorter, so in my opinion it's better. But anyways, I don't care if it ends up being called appdata as long as this happens

Neither? :P I'm going for /3ds/* (like /3ds/Luma, or /3ds/corbenik/ or /3ds/hbl/)
You mean the current wild west we're trying to move away from, so that HBL can show a clean apps directory, but CIA's still have somewhere to put their data?

I hate the clutter in my SD card and I'd love to have it more structured!

I really like this idea of a top level 3ds folder

I realize that A9LH is hard coded to the root directory but couldn't it be changed to check in both places?

That way new users or people comfortable with updating A9LH could take advantage of the new structure

ShadowNAND already uses /homebrew/3ds/boot.bin instead of /arm9loaderhax.bin, however it's subject to change.

While you at it :p

Now if you use multiple CFW like Luma3DS and Corbenik

\luma\payloads\
\corbenik\chain\ (\skeith\chain\)

Is it possible to have 1 unified folder for payloads?
\3ds\Payloads\

Since corbenik/skeith uses browsing and selecting the payload we can keep the Luma3Ds payloading naming :)
- button_payload.bin

So when done, we don't have to have the same payload twice on the SD!

To change all homebrew to another fixed folder works only if everyone follows the lead.

Partly i would love to see homebrew detecting from where it gets executed and work
from that path as a base, at least this would allow everyone to use their prefered folder.

To have a unified payloads folder would be nice and bad at the same time because
you can't use different files and tools might get out of sync or functioning.

I'm no dev, but I for one can say that this would be a nice change, as I hate all these folders cluttering up my root. Having all the homebrew in a 3ds folder, then the actual 3dsx homebrew in an apps folder INSIDE the 3ds folder would clean up the root a fair amount.
I support this 100% if someone attempts to make a hbl-mod
I guess while we're talking about someone making a hbl-mod custom theme support would be nice too but this isn't really ontopic now is is it sorry :P
@suloku has made exactly what you're talking about.
