That's from where my theory comes. I had some (old, but not all of 'em) CD Decks and burning it @ 52x with a 52x CD did not work. Only 4x and slower worked. Might be a myth but it worked fine back then. I don't know if this changes with DVDs.
EDIT: Did not work = CDs with jumpy tracks, or unreadable tracks etc
 
burned all my wii games 16x, only hiccup I've come across is DQ: Swords froze w/ error during opening FMV, ejected/reinserted disc, worked fine. Also perhaps it can be attributed to minor and brief choppiness in a few SSBB fmvs for me.

I've never burnt a Wii single layer game at less than 18x. The couple of copies of SSBB I've burnt have been done at whatever the top rated speed of the discs was. 8x I think.
 
As it has been mentioned, it all depends on your media/burner/pc combo.

For example, burning faster is likely to give you a lot more problems if the drive and/or software buffer cannot keep up with the burn speed. Or if your drive controller is in PIO mode in which case the drive will burn at an inconsistent speed (and likely a whole lot slower than you want it to).

Apart from factors like these, generally you just find a sweet spot that works for you. It's recommended to start at the rated speed of the media and work your way (usually down) from there.

When I was making backups for my modded Gamecube, my burner (BenQ DW1640) seemed to write best at 8x for most of the media I used. 4x burns ended up slightly worse, giving DREs every now and then (12x burns were a bit inconsistent but generally better than my 4x burns), and at 2.4x I usually ended up with a disc that couldn't be recognized at all.
The Wii is a lot more forgiving thankfully, and burning at 8x still gives me the best results - ie. the laser doesn't stress out like it occasionally does with 2.4x burns on the same media.
I've confirmed these results by doing quality scans as well, so it's not just my imagination.

Another couple of tips:
-Turn off variable power control (called different things on different drives, on BenQ is WOPC) if possible. This can make the drive slow down and speed up mid-burn, which results in dips in the burning speed curve - discs with a nice speed curve tend to like the Wii a lot more (this isn't the only factor of course but it certainly helps).
-A lot of modern drives 'learn' the media by developing an optimum write strategy the first time you burn a disc with a particular media identification code. So if your first disc with a particular media wasn't so great, try one or two more to see if they are better.
 
Apperantly:

1 - The gyroscopic phenomenon of disk rotation at high speed make the CD movement more stable (same as a spinning top, the faster itgoes, the more stable it is).

2 - The power of the laser is stronger when you burn at fast speed, so the hole burned on the CD are cleaner.

3 - Burning at fast speed can avoid some mistakes or unprecisions of the laser. It's just as you'd better record at fast speed with a audio track recorder.
 
Most dvd-rs are designed to be burned at their maximum speed.

Mostly I burn them with half of the speed they are made for. (So if it's a 16x DVD, I burn it on 8x)

As long as you can burn at x16 without problem there is no reason to change ;-)

My old Nec is just fine for me ... like unbreakable so far ( i drop a lot of drives these last ten years ... ) ... Sadly my only experience with Plextor was an expensive PX-708A who died after 12 months ... perhaps i was just unlucky... I could buy three Nec drives for the same price. Pioneer DVR-112D and Pioneer DVR-115 had excellent reviews but i don't have one. Some LG drives are reported working fine for Wii but some others are really bad ... Some Samsung are great too but my next choice would be a low cost Nec again i guess ... i'm not a burning whore anymore

This has been discussed on quite a lot of threads - most drives will burn at max speed with no issues - testing on a PC is pointless as the wii DVD reader isnt as good as a PC drive.
Its a matter of trial and error with most - ive modded quite a few wii's and games that work on one wont on another and its purely due to the dvd drive in them as its the same game i use to test everything.

speeds vary from person to person based on their wii , their burner and their discs.

none is better than the other , its just a matter of finding what works for you.
 
I have never got a backup to load that was burned at 2x. So it is fail to me, but different wii dvd drives and burners it's different.
 
I personally think that drives have come on a long way now and the requirement to burn at lower speeds is not there any more. They are much better at doing what they do. I've proved to myself that with my setup, whether I burn at 2.4x or 16x, it makes no difference.
