Hacking Problems with savegames on GBA

Hi guys, I just got a GBA SP and i purchased M3 perfect lite. I'm a total noob, and, well, when i play some game, i can save normally and all, but if i remove m3 adapter from GBA and put it back in, all my saves are gone. I can't figure out why is this, so help me out if you know what the problem might be.

Battery is most likely dead since it has been sitting around for a long while on the shelf for more than 2 years.

yes but you need to solder or use tape and it could be dangerous

not sure if it's the same for the lite but does this use a memory card for storage or is it built in storage? On the m3 real gba expansion pack used with the ds you must restart the ds once you are done playing for it to back the save file up to the memory card otherwise it's just in battery and as soon as you take out the expansion the power is cut and you lose that save, granted you did not restart the system and let it save the file to the memory card.
