Hello: I have a hardware modded Wii that was later softmodded. It has HBC (v1.05) already installed, Neogamma R8 beta7 IOS249. Wii software version is 4.1U. It was a few years ago, but I remember doing something called "trucha bug restoration". I have not played it for quite a years now.

Recently I tried playing again and found it can not play some of the newer games. I think I need to update my softmod. But I am not sure how. Do I start from scratch, treat it as if it had never been softmodded and start fresh? Or do only update some component? I spent the last couple of days reading the forum, only to get more confused. I would appreciate someone pointing me to the right direction. Thanks!!

Just follow one of the complete ultimate guides on here and don't worry about anything else that's already on the Wii as it'll overwrite safely anyway.

But small rundown of what you should achieve:

  1. Update HBC via wifi if it let's you.
  2. Update Wii via normal method (No reason not to update anyway these days)
  3. Get Cios installed in slots 249, 250 and 251.
  4. Get USBLOADERGX.
  5. Pop games on a USB HDD or SD Card.
  6. Run them from there.

HERE is a good guide!
But don't worry about the initial "Getting HBC installed" part just the Cios installer part.

But small rundown of what you should achieve:

  1. Update HBC via wifi if it let's you. Make sure you have a clean ios58 prior to updating
  2. Update Wii via normal method (No reason not to update anyway these days). But there is no reason to update via the official method either; a power outage might brick you Wii and there is no new functionality apart from iso58 and WiiShop Channel but a load of anti-hack patches. If you don't have ios58 or need the newest Shop Channel, you can use ios58 installer and use ModMii to update the Shop Channel.
  3. Get Cios installed in slots 249, 250 and 251.. Slots # alone is meaningless. Install d2x v8 or later with base 56 for slot 249, base 57 for slot 250
  4. Get USBLOADERGX.
  5. Pop games on a USB HDD or SD Card.
  6. Run them from there.
