The idea that the continents were once connected quickly gained prominence after the discovery of the Americas and the realization that the coasts of S America and Africa aligned quite well (so ~500 years)

The scientific basis of continental drift was first published on in 1912 (tho less scientific ideas go back further), by the 1950s these ideas were mainstream in geology
