Just thought I'd put my bit of info on here.
I'd remain highly skeptical on this altogether. I personally do not believe the 3DS homebrew will have anything for the next year or two. Couple of reasons as to why. One: the 3DS is supposed to have an ARM11 Processor (
http://3dbrew.org/wiki/Hardware ). This was rumored, and I believe was uncovered in the tear down process. If that is the case, there is a very high chance that it protects against buffer overflows. This has been the most common exploit in Nintendo's systems since the Wii homebrew scene started (maybe before then as well, but I'm not sure). The Twilight hack, Super Smash Bros. Level hack, even that DSi Sudoku hack, they all used this, so naturally they are probably aware and trying to prevent that (as evident with the sudoku hack being removed and actually patched). Also, if you go to
http://www.arm.com/products/processors/cla...arm11/index.php , you can see that the ARM11 processor supports "TrustZone for hardware-enforced security, and tightly coupled memories for real-time applications.", aka, the possibility of preventning a buffer overflow. Now Nintendo might be using a "customized" version of it that doesn't use that. I can't verify that it does use it. But the fact that it's possible, and that it seems to be an ARM11 processor makes it seem more likely. The fact that the save games can still be edited fairly easily, and that an average jpeg image can be loaded also seems odd. And if this is the case, 3DS homebrew is most likely a while away. Everything on the 3DS is run in 3DS mode it seems, which means that this protection would always be in place. The DS games seem to be running through some sort of emulator. If you take a game such as Super Mario 64 DS, shut it so it goes into sleep mode and makes the sleep mode noise. Wait a few seconds before opening it, and it will make another. When you press the home button on the 3DS, notice how it brings up a menu. Wait a few seconds again, and then return to the game. It should make the exact same noise. If that's the case, then I'm not sure how else they could do that other than by doing something software wise to force sleep mode. If that is true, then sure, you could overflow a DS game as well, but not only would you be in DS mode, you would still be forced to find another way around the buffer overflows.
Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like 3DS homebrew is very close. Now granted, all of that could be wrong, so don't take my word on it. But I do think Nintendo may have finally learned. If that's the case, this is going to be a tough battle to get homebrew back on it.
