So my son accidentally did an update because a game refused to play not it just boots to this screen.

I put the most recent luma 3ds files on the root of the micro sd card but it doesnt load it

I am sure its something small but what am i missing or is the sd card slot in the 3dsxl not working?

Not a brick. Make sure sd card is formatted correctly. FAT32 32kb clusters. make sure to backup your data before. and put the boot.firm on sd root. if it still dont work and says booted from ctrnand. then get another sd card if ya got one and use that.

The card loads fine on my pc but so maybe its not the card but the slot?
It could load fine in your PC, but not on your 3DS. It's not the problem of card itself either so You don't have to change the card.

Various details in how you formatted your SD card could affect the compatibility with your 3DS, and there were some guides which formats the SD card 3 times using different tools to ensure that it works with 3DS. I'll try to find it.

also, If it worked well previously but stopped working after the update, maybe problem could've been caused by another reason?

ive seen problems with one card to another. Its suggested to try another one to see if its a bad card or the 3ds slot reader.
