How safe is this sysupdater-1.4 to do on a 2ds 10.5 with browserhax?

So far no bricks have been reported, so I'd say it seems pretty stable. I'd install Menuhax first though so just incase it fails you won't have to go through the pain of browserhax again.

Admittedly, I don't know much about actual hacking or the code itself. However, if this is using the race attack mentioned in the 32c3 talk, is there a chance that the increased processor speed of the N3DS may be executing and mapping the "proper" code before the chunks are rewritten by the hack?

Do what @Bedel said, upgrade and try again assuming you have access to oot3dshax or cubic ninja. If you don't, order oot3ds and a powersaves, it's a total of like 35 dollars.

that is true, but the test app sets the clock rate to the o3DS speed (and disables L2 cache) before running the exploit, so the problem is somewhere else.
also this exploit doesn't modify/inject any code, it just modifies some flags.

You don't have menuhax do you? Menuhax gives you a black screen after a downgrade because you're don't have the 9.2 payload installed.
