The Wii has less of everything than the Wii U emulation-wise. So maybe it would be different. And don't you just take code from emulators already out there?

EDIT: Plus that was 5 years ago.

That's my point. It's been well over a decade, and we barely got to having full emulation on a PC of the PS2 with current multi-core processors and GB of memory at our disposal.

You're talking about running MIPS code on a PowerPC CPU though with limited memory space to work with. It's the same issue the Wii had with WiiSX. If we just got to having 95% compatibility with a PC, it's going to probably be a long time for a playable PS2 emulator on any console.

Also, you can't just throw hardware at an emulator and make it work. The underlying system has a lot to do with it. Look at Retroarch for the Wii vs PS3. The PS3 with it's vastly more powerful HW has weaker emulation of consoles due to the difficulty of the underlying system/shaders/CPU/GPU emulation. Even non-BC PS3 have a pretty dismal compatibility list with their own emulator, and that's coming from Sony themselves.

And if you want to bold that... it was asked 2 years ago as well, same answer.
