I've gotten addicted to Pokémon games and I got at least one of each gen to play on original hardware. Already finished yellow, crystal, firered, sapphire and jp emerald. now, i want to play the ds games but, I've been recording some of my gameplay and i would like to do the same for the ds/3ds games. so, my best option would be installing a capture card to my 3ds but that's a plan for the future, next would be using the software base capture forgot its name, as far as i know it doesn't capture ds games only 3ds.

the solution I came up with is using my steam deck to play and record when needed and move my save to the cartridge when I'm not recording to play on original hardware.

the questions, am I able to just copy and paste the save from my cartridge to the emulator and vice verse without altering the save format or do extra steps? checkpoint or godmode are my friends, right?

If you want to transfer your 3DS Pokemon game's save to an emulator, you can use Checkpoint or GodMode9 to back your save file up and you should be fine to run it on Steam Deck and use Checkpoint to re-flash your save file. The 3DS is still not my territory, so I might be wrong.

However, if you want to back up DS Pokemon game save files, you can run GodMode9, and copy the save file to SD card, run it on a emulator for Steam Deck and then re-flash that updated save file using GodMode9, because as far as I'm aware, Checkpoint does not support DS games.

Let me know if this works! Good luck!

I'd work through platinum, heart gold and black2 on the nds. And then Y and Ultra Sun on 3ds. Curious which ones you're going to do!

I do love the hardware capture cards but they are expensive and unavailable. The software route for 3ds: https://github.com/RattletraPM/Snickerstream/releases (stream 3ds games without a capture card (via wifi) if you have a modded N3ds (XL) or N2DS xl.) and indeed no ds support to my knowledge.

Good luck and have a blast!
