One of the pokemon games i own physically is black 2 and i dumped it via GM9 on my 3DS and patched the rom so i could play blaze black 2 redux,
however whenever i speak to hugh (the rival) at virbank city to get on the boat to castelia the game crashes with the infamous red screen, I am beyond confused
as the creator of the game (Drayano) said on twitter that it does work in twilight menu and i replied to the post in which he states that my issue, and it's been quite a
few days with no response, imo it's safe to say i'm at a lost on what to do, any help would be appreciated.

it works totally fine here, so I can't really say what would fix it for you

patched rom crc32 E5AED11C, md5 827CF659209210D87BAE5BDAD6D09C93, this is for blaze black 2 redux 1.4.1, I guess make sure your rom matches and that it didnt patch improperly or something

works on both dsi and 3ds, twilight menu 27.7.1 with nds bootstrap 1.6.2, I guess if your stuff is out of date you could make sure to update

otherwise the sd card could be the problem, I'd make sure it's formatted correctly, and try other cards maybe. or you could try disabling dma access for the game (Y on the game in the menu to access per-game settings)

I also see that they still couldnt be bothered keeping dsi mode working, unfortunately I'm not able to fix it because the dsi binaries from the base game seem to be totally incompatible with the rom hack. someone who actually knows how this stuff work would have to manually fix the dsi binaries (probably @DeadSkullzJr, the last update to the rom hack was over a year ago so I'm pretty sure it's safe to say there isn't going to be more updates to come and you wont have to worry about having to keep up with updates)

you might have success forcing the games to run in dsi mode, even without the actual dsi mode functionality. card read dma is also disabled by default in dsi mode, but maybe twl mode clock speed and vram might somehow help it not crash

is there a site that i could check the rom header i forgot the name of the one i used to use?

also lack of dsi mode was never really a dealbreaker i have a VM setup with a WFC adapter

Busted hack huh? I'll look into it, can't make promises though, some hacks, though rare, quite frankly are beyond being able to be repaired, the only fix for those is basically remaking it in better shape than whatever the original hacker did. Really wish hackers had better sense of quality control.

so if im reading this right, it should be Blaze Black 2 Redux checksum #4 considering i patched it with just the "(complete)"
.xdelta, correct?

oh yeah, I had only tried the regular complete patch too. but since this was the one you're using I guess it didn't end up mattering
before i used a secondary patch {complete evless i believe it was} so i'll test out the complete standalone and if that doesn't work it's safe to say my dump of the game or the copy as a whole is bad (this is actually my sisters copy but shhhhh)

xdelta checks the hash of the original file before patching, so in theory it should be good. if your base rom was wrong then it wouldnt have let you patch (unless you used a different patcher that allows you to bypass the check)

then i should be fine i used the xdelta that came with the hack

update: it still crashes

sorry, I didnt see the update until now. have you tried with the config options, with card read dma turned off and/or forcing to run the game in dsi mode? it will not run with dsi mode functionality since the dsi binaries are missing, but nds bootstrap can force it to run with the higher clock speed and higher memory anyway, which could help

otherwise, a different sd card, if you have one?

edit: i found out that the c gear is what causes the problem having it off fixes it

hey, I'm stupid. so fixing the dsi mode does work, I was just missing a step

https://github.com/R-YaTian/TinkeDSi/blob/main/README.md

the readme does explain it clearly, it's not enough to just import donor iheader. I could have sworn I was able to get that to work for a different game in the past, I guess the oneI tried in the past might have still had the proper original arm7i and arm9i in the rom or something. but anyway you have to export ftc/arm7i.bin and ftc/arm9i.bin from the original game

the rom hack doesnt show arm7i.bin and arm9i.bin in the file browser, after importing the iheader you save the file, and reopen the edited file. it will show dummy arm7i.bin and arm9i.bin files in the ftc folder. replace them with the ones from the original game and re-save the game

just like that, it works. you'll also need to manually provide apfix files for the new header, if you use nds bootstrap. if anyone's interested I can make a better step by step guide, or take the time to make patches for every version of both games

reading this has me inclined to believe that this kind of thing is more or less an after thought when developing a DS rom hack if there was already doubt on the table by some, however i do think it'd be a good idea to write a separate post on this forum containing a tutorial, i would suggest pokecommunity or project pokemon for this but both have their fair share of issues when it comes to making a post in general, the former commonly has entitled members and the latter just flat out has moderators who will take down anything for no reason at all, pick your poison i guess.
