Maybe the first line isn't pointing to a valid ASM instruction
Here is an example:
Find asm that reads strength of the character

Select this instruction then Add to cheat

use the add utility codes button and now you have three cheats created

Activate the first one goto game then goto the pointer to buffer and you will find this

The stats that I move the cursor into, edit them will reflect on the game, not sure what impact it does to the game, could just be for display

hp code is the one I use for the cheat that I release. This one if you create the utility code will get all the hp for everyone who participate in combat. str code is easier to use as you don't have to play the game much but to get to combat you have to spend some time
If you create the code manually instead of using asm explorer to add the code you have to save to file. The create utility code button will do a load as a first step so anything that wasn't saved will disappear.
